A bit of history

Baden-Baden lies at the edge of the Black Forest. People have used its hot springs since Roman times, and the warm water still feeds the town’s thermal baths.

In the 19th century the town became a meeting place for European society. The Kurhaus, a neoclassical spa house built in the 1820s, added gaming rooms, and guests came from many countries to walk, to take the waters and to spend an evening at the tables.

Today the Casino im Kurhaus is still part of that story. The Trinkhalle, the long arcade in the spa gardens, belongs to the same tradition of a town for walking, meeting and spending the evening. The two postcards from 1898 show the Kurhaus, then called the Konversationshaus, and its Louis XVI hall.

The Kurhaus and the spa gardens

The casino is part of the spa gardens, where the Kurhaus colonnade, the casino wing and the Trinkhalle stand in the same park.
